Overview of Accrington
This Lancashire town was the home of the Accrington Pals – a Lancashire battalion formed in the early months of the First World War, 235 of whom were killed and 350 wounded in only 10 minutes during the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916. An exhibition on the Accrington Pals features in The Heritage Centre at Oswaldtwistle Mills. Haworth Art Gallery
Housed in a mock Tudor style Edwardian house, The Haworth is a hidden gem art gallery in Lancashire. Surrounded by its own pretty park, the gallery features some impressive collections across its four galleries. The Tiffany glass collection is particularly prized – this was donated to The Haworth by a Joseph Briggs who left Accrington in the 1890s at just 17, heading to New York and end up working with Tiffany. Briggs sent back a selection of glass to the town, and what you see here on display at The Haworth represents some of Tiffany’s finest glass.
Artwork treasures are here too, donated by notable locals including ‘Storm off the French Coast’ by Claude Joseph Vernet. A fine selection of 19th and 20th century art is on show and changing exhibitions are ones to watch. The Haworth often features exhibitions on iconic artists including in the past British artist Peter Blake. The gallery also keenly supports up and coming artists so expect to see innovative new work across painting, crafts and photography here. A special glassware and Tiffany gift shop is on-site. Find the Haworth Art Gallery just south of Accrington town centre off the A680.
