Overview of Ashton-under-Lyne

Ashton-under-Lyne is located on the north bank of the River Tame, in the Greater Manchester Borough of Tameside, approximately 198 miles north-west of London and 7 miles east of Manchester.

The town has a population of around 44,500. Administratively it is headquarters for the Borough of Tameside which covers an area of approximately 103 sq kms.

It is an historic market town surrounded on most sides by attractive countryside and lying close to the Pennines. The largest of the nine towns that make up Tameside, it is a busy retail and commercial centre with well integrated modern developments and with many visitor and tourist attractions.

The Manor of Ashton was owned by the Assheton family from the 14th century. It was one of the first planned towns in England since medieval times when in the 1790s its western part was laid out in a grid pattern.

Historically the town’s economy was based upon textiles, coal mining and engineering but today there is more diversification and a range of modern industries, including hi-tech companies, have been introduced. Ashton’s industries include manufacturing, engineering, food processing, leather, plastics, textiles and brewing.

The name Ashton is believed to originate from ‘settlement (ton) near ash trees’. The ‘lyne’ element may be a corruption of ‘lime’ – the area north of Ashton was once called ‘Lyme’ with the town then becoming Ashton under Lyme (recorded as Ashton sub Lima in 1422). By the 19th century the name had changed to Ashton under Lyne
